How do you increase blog traffic?

Today, I’m listening. For a change, I’m going to ask that you tell me something.

There are lots of sites that strategize about increasing blog readership. Beside providing interesting content—because that’s a given and a subjective variable—what’s the most effective thing you’ve done that has increased your blog traffic?

Writers and Readers: Heads up! Exciting changes ahead!

I have some really cool changes coming in the near future. I really don’t want to lose anybody as the changes take effect so, against my nature and all that’s holy, brace yourself for a brief commercial:

What changed? I’ve been making lots of moves in the last year or so, but there’s a lot more to do.

Since last May, I’ve been posting to Chazz Writes five times a week.

That will soon change to three rocking posts each week:

Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

When is “soon” with the new schedule? Probably after next week.

Nothing but the schedule will change immediately.

  • I’m still looking for authors to profile.
  • I’m still available for guest blogging opportunities and giving guest blogging opportunities.
  • I’m still editing just as much as ever.
  • Also still looking for (affordable) web developers to help me migrate to a new hosted platform that will become more interactive.

What exactly is coming, Chazz?

Aside from my regular editing duties, I’m editing my novel and its companion e-book.The details are top secret until I’m ready to launch. Subscribers will be in on the ground floor for extras when the books drop like valkyries from the sky attacking to a Wagner soundtrack.

Happy New Year!

 May 2011 be the year you

make your dreams come true,

publish your work

and vanquish your enemies!

I went to a party tonight. People asked me what I was doing. I asked what they were doing. Many in the family are an artsy crowd so we talked about the movies we’d seen and the TV we loved. (Yay The OG Buffy! Boo revamped coming-soon-Joss-Wheedonless Buffy!)

And I felt grateful to travel in circles concerned about arts of all kinds. Although I only started up this project in May, I’ve made new friends through attending writing conferences and blogging about writing and publishing. I’ve picked up more editorial work I love. I’ve edited website copy and helped people on their way to publication. I’ve provided (gentle) writing critiques and writers have been really receptive to my efforts.

The research I do here serves my writing and I’ve had the opportunity to promote books and publicize authors to my growing readership. (In part, the love bump I got from one of my heroes, director Kevin Smith, helped me grow and aspire for more.)

And you keep coming back for more. Most of all, I’m thankful for you. When I see my stats climb, I know I’m reaching, teaching and helping more people create art or make their art better.

For me, Chazz Writes is not just about getting gigs. It’s about building something good.

I write.

I edit.

I publish.

More to come.

WordPress people: Textbook, Tips and tutorial links

Let me be clear: I do love WordPress. However, WordPress can be a bit baffling at first. Even regular users may not be familiar with all WordPress can do. I have two recommendations to use this tool to the fullest. First, check out the WordPress 24-Hour Trainer by George Plumley. I met the author at a writers’ conference. He was a nice guy, who, incidentally, got the gig to write a WordPress manual when the publisher put a call out for an author through Twitter. (Some people say that sort of thing doesn’t happen. It does.)

#Writers: How much should you tweet?

This article in the Globe and Mail advises you drop tweeting from your schedule. The main point is, writers waste time tweeting when they don’t have something to sell.

Well, yeah, but…

I’m not sure why anyone thinks a writer’s e-marketing time should be all or nothing. It’s probably useful to market to your audience, present or future. Your marketing time should not cut into your writing time. If it does, you either aren’t writing enough or not prioritizing. Blogging and tweeting to your market (present or future) should be a fun thing for you to do. If you don’t like it, then don’t do it.

I tweet, but always during time that would otherwise be dead time (e.g. waiting for something, while suffering insomnia or during commercials when I forgot to PVR something.) I enjoy blogging about writing and I make time for it. As a result, I watch a lot less TV than I used to do.

But writing time has to come first. The real question is, must you blog or make a book trailer or tweet to your followers? Can’t you just leave that to someone else when the time comes? (Answer: No. Selling anything means selling yourself.)

The Globe article suggests that it is often contests that curate bestsellers (especially in Canada.) Mm, yes, but what if you don’t write the sort of fiction that’s likely to even be considered by the Giller Prize panel? You can’t leave your book’s promotion to the whim of a handful of people, not when the power of the Internet is right in front of you.

It’s worth noting that publishers expect authors to shoulder most of the responsibility for promoting their books. Your publisher and agent will want you to have a blog as a home base that all your marketing efforts feed. If you’re into self-publishing, it’s all you, though that’s arguably not much different from what it ever was. (I’ve been a publicist and I’ve worked with publicists. What they’re doing is not rocket science. You can do it and if you won’t do that, at least control it.)

Do people follow you on Twitter and then buy your books based on those interactions? I bought a Scott Sigler book after he shot me a kind tweet. If Margaret Atwood alerted to her Twitter followers that she was holding a book signing at a particular bookstore, not only would they all get her message, that’s free targeted marketing to a group very likely to show up if they can.

Is social media marketing the norm for book marketing? Answers: Yes, no and not yet. Yes, because it’s the cheapest way to go. No, because the are many authors and publishers out there who haven’t embraced the full power of social media’s potential. Lots of people still think Twitter is about letting people know about that spicy burger from lunch backing up on you. They don’t get that Twitter can push information you want to you (sometimes information you didn’t even know you needed.) And finally, not yet, because I wouldn’t count on that “no” remaining stable.

Yes, there have been authors who did not promote themselves. JD Salinger became a recluse and never tweeted. However, that’s a lousy example for two reasons:

1. He was JD Salinger and we aren’t.

2. The world (and the world of publishing) has changed drastically, even among those who are reluctant to embrace new models.

For instance, the number of book sales reps has plummeted. Interactions through Twitter and Amazon Reviews and Blogs and search engines: All that technology has turned up the volume on the marketing environment so it’s hard to hear the tiny books by unknown authors who aren’t stepping up to speak for themselves.

Yes, I know you have lots of books on your shelves and most of your buying decisions were not influenced by anything you saw on Twitter. You’re right. But as e-books flood the market from self-publishers, you won’t be right about that for long.

Build your following now so when you do have something to sell, you’ll have lots of people to spread the word. If you don’t begin to market yourself until you have a book to sell, you’re already late.

First I have to buy in to you. Then I consider your product. Twas always thus, but now more than ever.

Problogger: The Key to Starting Your Author Platform

Yesterday I told you that, as a writer who hopes to be an author, you need to start a blog now.

Here’s a tool to get you started: Problogger.net and Darren Rowse and Chris Garrett’s excellent book Problogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income. 

Rowse is a smart fellow from Australia who teaches people how to start up blogs, optimize them and eventually make money from them. I’m not an affiliate or anything. I just think that this is a very useful book for you to read because he discusses in detail  how to make smart choices about developing your web presence. For instance, should you host it yourself? What are the pros and cons of paying someone else to host your blog? Then he guides you step by step on how to actually make it happen. He talks about Search Engine Optimization (SEO), content, and every other detail you’ll need to achieve lift off.

I’m listening to the audiobook now and I’m enjoying it very much. However, I don’t recommend that you buy the audiobook. There is excellent information available here, but you need to buy the paperback from Amazon because you’ll get lost in the technical aspects of his instruction. Listening to the reader slog through saying, http://etc.,…  is just too much to absorb. It’s not that the book isn’t interesting and engaging. It’s just that the nitty-gritty of the helpful bits is too nitty-gritty if you just listen to it. 

As soon as I’m finished listening to the book, I’m going to buy the hard copy so I can better put his advice into action.

Happy Sept 1st! Three Publishing Tips (plus one awesome link)

1. If you’re looking for an agent, hunt for freshly minted ones on their way up at established agencies.   Brian Henry of Quick Brown Fox has a useful newsletter. He identifies fledgling agents who aren’t too jaded and are actually looking for clients. Imagine that! Keep an eye on his blog if you’re in the market for an agent. I knew Brian when we both worked at Harlequin. He doesn’t remember me, but I’ve decided he’s not a bad guy despite that.

2. Don’t let rejection so your production and shipping. Like they say, it’s a subjective business. Hone it and then follow Heinlein’s rule: keep sending it out.   

3. If it’s good, you will eventually connect with someone who loves it. Or at least sees that they can sell it.   

(Or become a publisher yourself…but that’s a different blog post.)
