History: An honours degree in Journalism, a diploma in Health and I’m a veteran of the Banff School of Fine Arts Publishing Workshop in both books and magazines.
I’ve worked in publishing as a production assistant, editorial assistant, Junior Editor, Senior Editor, Publicist, Book Marketer and Ghost Writer. Yep, I was a publishing drone in Canadian Book Publishing. I worked for Harlequin, Film Canada, The Canadian Book Information Centre, Lester & Orpen Dennys and Cannon Book Distributors. Don’t be alarmed at the resume. (To get a raise it was easier to switch companies and leap up the ladder that way.)
In fact, if you work in publishing and you’re waiting for a raise, that’s my advice. Quit. But Quit up!
