I get a little annoyed by people who romanticize poverty once they are wildly successful – but there it is; many successful people do. I suppose it is due to some need to sound humble.
I sincerely doubt many ambitious individuals (writers, painters, filmmakers, entrepreneurs etc) revelled in their poverty. And only the maladjusted success (with issues larger than economic) would want to return to those days.
Having said that – I’ve always liked Douglas Adams. He is an example of something small and cool suddenly catching fire and mushrooming into a pop cultural touchstone.
That’s the kind of ride I hope to find myself on one day!
I don’t think it’s poverty he’s romanticizing, but youth, excitement and the transitions therein. He was looking back to the time he was in media res.
